The Seed
Giedrė Žickytė makes films about what it costs to be free. Her documentary Šuolis (The Jump) tells the story of Lithuanian sailor Simas Kudirka, who in 1970 leapt from a Soviet vessel onto an American ship in a desperate bid for freedom, only to be handed back. The film won eight international awards, including Best Documentary at Warsaw International Film Festival and the Main Jury Award at Salem Film Festival, and was selected as Lithuania’s candidate for the Academy Awards. Her earlier work, Master and Tatyana, won four Silver Cranes, and I’m Not From Here earned a nomination at the European Film Academy Awards. Giedrė’s cinema reaches for something essential in the human experience, the courage it takes to become who you truly are, even when the world resists. Moonmakers, the production house she co-founded, is the home for that kind of storytelling. The challenge was to build an identity that carried the same quality as the films themselves: intimate, authentic, unhurried, and willing to trust the viewer with depth.
